The Model 720 is very similar to the Remington Model 11, but parts are not interchangeable. The Model 720 military shotgun was only available in the riot and training versions, no trench guns. The observed serial number range for the US riot gun is 69400 to 88250, placing this gun dead center. This is a later gun with the brushed blue finish. Martial markings consists of a small "US", flaming bomb and proof "P" on left side of receiver. There were no inspection stamps applied to stock. Front sight consists of a bead on ramp. Left side of barrel has the Ordnance bomb and proof "P". Bottom of the barrel has a matching serial number. Choke is marked with three small asterisks, which denote cylinder bore. Also stamped "MODEL 720" with Savage information. Late models were furnished with plain pistol grip stock and forend with grasping grooves. Buttplate is a proper black plastic unmarked. Does not come with sling swivels. Late models did not have the game scene on frame. Everything on this late production World War II Model 720 US riot gun is correct per Canfield's book "Complete Guide to United States Military Combat Shotguns" pages 145 to 148. Canfield notes "A genuine Savage Model 720 riot gun is one of the most elusive second World War production shotguns on the market, second only to the Ithaca Model 37 trench gun." This represents and excellent example of the scarce, all original World War II issue Savage Model 720 riot gun. CONDITION: Barrel retains approximately 85% of the factory original late war brushed blue finish with usual handling marks. Receiver shows handling marks, wear on high edges, and some patina showing through the original brush blue finish. Stocks are excellent with some chipping where grip meets frame. Mirror bore and fine action.
