1831 dated. One of the scarcer contractors for the 1816 rifle, the estimated production of R. & J.D. Johnson is only 600 muskets. The lock with U.S. eagle over Johnson, dated 1831, "MIDDLETON CONN." The barrel is dated 1831 at breech with crisp U.S. inspector's marks. Deeply struck inspector's mark "J.M." on left side of stock. CONDITION: The lock in crisp condition throughout with all original small parts. The barrel is cleaned to arsenal bright with some pitting on forward section of barrel, approximately 18". Original ramrod. Trigger guard and barrel bands cleaned to arsenal bright. Buttplate cleaned to arsenal bright. Dark walnut full stock in remarkable good condition throughout with none of the usual wear around lockplate and sideplate. Stock would rate excellent throughout for this model. Action is as new, with powerful mainspring; bore is nearly perfect and shows little evidence of firing. This is a superior example of an 1816 flintlock musket, and except for the areas of pitting on barrel, would be one of the better examples extant.
