Ohio joined the Union as the 17th state in 1803. Because of this, this horn, which shows a 16 star flag, was probably made between 1795 and 1803. The curved tapered body measures about 10-1/4" overall with a fluted conical spout and a convex wooden plug with an eye for sling attachment. The horn has several carved rings and serrated rings near the top of the decorated section. The upper section is faceted. The horn is decorated with a cartouche around the initials "I*C", a sixteen star American flag on a post, the initials "JP", a folk art star, and several New England style trees and birds. CONDITION: Dry surface with a honey patina, a few scattered scratches and marks from use. Plug missing a chip and a few small areas of insect damage around base. A very nice and attractive folk art powder horn in great as found condition.
