Many of the New York City gunmakers, such as Patrick Mullin, produced these high quality but unadorned guns, and this style became almost a trademark of these makers. This lovely combination rifle/shotgun, in its original case, has 30" "best" stub Damascus barrels with slightly raised broad concave rib engraved "MACFARLANE. MAKER. NEW . YORK." (Working at 5 Dey Street, 1844-1860). Rib is fitted with single standing leaf rear sight and silver blade front on square ramp. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with London nitro proofs for 10 bore shotgun and 16 bore rifle (.675 groove diameter). A rosewood ramrod with matching serial number has brass head and tail, and is held by two plain pipes. Breech plugs with vented platinum blow-outs are case hardened. Front spring locks with flat faced serpentine hammers and all other furniture including breech iron, trigger plate with nicely filed finial, trigger guard, and steel buttplate with long top spur, are all lightly case hardened and unengraved. Stock of beautifully marbled and figured European walnut has wide spaced checkering at grip. Drop points are nicely shaped and a gold shield at top of grip is engraved "GK". Stock mounts to barrels with side bolt through oval steel escutcheons. CONDITION: Excellent, appears nearly unfired. Barrels retain over 95% original brown with silvering on high points due to case wear. Nearly all temper blue remains on rear sight, and nipples, blue on front sight base considerably flaked and with some pitting. All other metal parts retain most of their light colored hardening, which is essentially a French grey. Stock has only a few scattered marks and bumps in its original oil finish, with two fairly deep digs on left side of grip checkering. Bores are excellent, bright and shiny throughout. Locks are crisp. Gun is housed in its original figured black walnut case with inlet shaped brass corners and central shield shaped escutcheon. Case is lined in purple velvet and contains fine ebony two piece cleaning rod, nipple key with ebony handle, pigskin lined powder flask with pewter top by James Dixon & Sons with matching leather shot pouch. Other accessories include a pigskin wallet with two piece nipple wrench, with turnscrew and spare nipples under end caps. Another compartment holds a case hardened steel oil bottle by Dixon, and an old card states "Property of Mrs. Ellen Kent Machinson" with New York address (note initials GK: this was probably her father's gun). Case is very fine with repaired cracks in top. Interior cloth is good with some staining and rubs. Accessories are very fine. This is a beautiful combo gun, well preserved. MGM 45.
