(Circa 1860) 30" Barrels of nicely patterned laminated steel are engraved "Gasquoine & Dyson, Market Place, Manchester No 1644" and "I. Platt Manchester" (This appears to be the person for whom this gun was made as leather label on top of case gives name and address of John Platt). Bottoms of barrels are stamped with London black powder proofs for 13 bore, and with gunmakers mark "TB" (Thomas Bissell?). Case hardened Jones under lever action with bar spring locks having tall round bodied serpentine hammers, is very nicely engraved. This engraving consists of near full coverage exceptionally well cut semi relief open shaded scroll. Setters and birds are within scroll pattern on lockplates, and makers name is on scrolled riband, also on each plate. Another setter graces the trigger guard bow and serial number is on long tang integral with trigger plate. Very fine, well marbled and lightly figured flesh toned European walnut buttstock measures 14-1/4" over checkered wood butt with steel heel and toe plates engraved en suite with action and locks. Fairly widely spaced flat top checkering is at grip. Matching splinter forend which is almost fully checkered has inset horn tip, and attaches to barrels with side bolt through engraved steel oval escutcheons. Gun comes in its original tan leather case with aforementioned leather name and address rectangle stitched to top. Case is lined in green cloth, and has original makers label in lid. A green japanned tray with space for barrels and cartridges under hinged lid, has applied label embossed "REGISTERED AP: 25: 1861" "BUSSEY, LONDON". Removal of tray allows access to lower compartment which houses action and buttstock. Tray contains 13 Eley pinfire cartridges, that appear to be loaded with powder charges but no shot. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrels retain approximately 90% original brown finish with excellent definition to bold pattern. Action retains a considerable amount of its original muted case hardening color, difficult to discern due to extensive engraving. Stocks retain over 90% original french polish finish with numerous marks and scratches. Checkering is lightly worn, more so on forend, with some fairly deep dings. Forend tip, once loose, has been re-glued. Bores are good with some scattered pitting, mostly shiny. Action is tight. Locks are excellent. Case leather is excellent, still bright and clean, with only a few minor scratches and marks. Lock and keeper mechanism missing from case. Interior is very fine. Label is very clear, somewhat soiled and foxed. Lift out tray retains most of its green lacquer. MGM136.
