Pope Model factory engraved. This particular example with "Stevens Pope" marked barrel (Pope barrel number P/726, Pope code 25/.59) is full octagon, Number 3 weight, and fitted with Stevens scope number 487, as well as front sight with interchangeable sighting discs. Under the forearm is an extra set of holes for the forearm, indicating that the barrel has been set back. Number 44 action is stamped on the face of the action and is fitted with double set triggers and Pope lever, as well as a Lyman tang sight adjustable for windage at top and elevation. Action is engraved in factory fancy scroll pattern with a field of large scroll on each side within half flower borders. Schuetzen style buttstock with right handed cheekpiece and nickel plated Pope special buttplate, is of nicely figured American walnut, checkering at grip has Fleur-di-Lis intrusions, and sporting an attractive fiddleback pattern. Matching schnabeled forend has very rare factory cork tip rest. Truly a very rare rifle showing the finest workmanship Stevens was capable of. CONDITION: Fine. Barrel retains most of its original blue with high edge wear and thinning overall. Action retains a considerable amount of its original case hardening color, strongest where protected. Stocks retain most of what appears to be their original finish with added oil, and a few scratches, heavy and light. Bore is fine, strong rifling throughout, with a bit of frosting and one or two minor pits at breech end. The lower prong on the buttplate is broken. Scope is good, retaining most of its blue with numerous dents and marks in tube. Somewhat fogged. Lyman tang sight is very fine. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Francis Brown. TR
