Designed by two US Generals, named William Ward and Bethel Burton for field trials in the 1870's. Of the 1,011 made, this is one of 316 carbines produced. Gun has a bolt action mechanism which was quite unique for that time considering other comparable U.S. service rifles. Carbine style slide bar with ring and carbine sights. Gun is marked with Ward Burton patent information on bolt and US Springfield 1871 on the receiver. Wood stock with steel US marked carbine style butt. PROVENANCE: Comes with tag stating this was issued to the 3rd US Calvary. CONDITION: Metal has worn to a silvery patina with some light pitting. Bore is shiny and clean with well worn rifling. Wood has heavy usage marks with a small crack above the ring bar and no visible cartouches. Rifle shows heavy hard usage as is further evidence of being one of the rare field tested carbines. These carbines were thought to have been all destroyed at the arsenal after testing and evaluation, but is mechanically sound. An extremely rare U.S. service weapon.
