According to the factory research this rifle was shipped from warehouse on October 15th, 1895 as a .30 caliber rifle with round barrel, plain trigger, fancy checkered stock, takedown and Winchester Express sights. Everything listed in letter matches with the exception that the barrel currently measures 20" and the Express rear sight is not a standard sporting sight. One must assume that this rifle was cut down to a so-called short rifle. Forearm measures 9-3/8"; magazine retaining band 3-1/2" on center from muzzle, does not have pin or pin hole, and is a more recent replacement; front sight set 7/8" on center; forend cap replaced screws. Rear sight is a Marbles rear sight. Period tang sight has been added. CONDITION: Balance of metal is basically grey patina. There is a small chip on left side of forearm at cap. Checkering is worn. Grain of the wood is stunning, but has darkened with oil. Fine action. Very good, strong rifling. This is a cool little rifle even as altered with a few replacement parts, it would be even better if restored even to its short rifle dimensions. It is particularly appealing in that it falls into the antique serial number range which allows its purchase by just about everybody.
