The War Burton rifle was approved for field trial in 1870. Approximately 1,015 were manufactured by Springfield Armory in 1871. Property marked with to E.L. Tisdale who is identified as a Police Marshal and as a former Private, in the Rockford Il, Artillery. Unique to be identified both For Civil war service and Post War law enforcement This is the first bolt action weapon produced by Springfield Armory. This weapon was rejected after field trials. Iron furniture was left in the white and came with two iron bands, sling swivels, cleaning rod, and military style folding ladder rear sight. Top of bolt is stamped "WARD BURTON PATENT" with number. Left side of frame stamped "US SPRINGFIELD 1871" with eagle. Two inspector stamps were stamped on left side of frame, "ESA" Erskin S. Allin and "JWK" John W. Keene. Buttplate is stamped "US". Features full length walnut stock. Comes with paperwork pertaining to E.L. Tisdale's police service, all photocopies. CONDITION. All metal has turned a soft, uncleaned gun metal patina. Stock has 3/4" ding on left side near front band, otherwise just usual nominal marks. Missing front floorplate screw. Mirror bore. Very nice, all original example of the first US bolt action rifle manufactured at the Springfield Factory.
