The last muzzleloading pistol adopted by the United States Government, the Aston Model 1842 saw extensive service in the Mexican War conflict and again utilized in the War of Northern Aggression or the Civil War depending upon your place of birth. These large .54 bore pistols have a captive ramrod and brass furniture. This example is dated 1851 on lock and tang (not fully discernible). Inspectors markings are very light on left side of stock and are not discernible. A spurious marking of "29 CS" has been stamped on the brass opposite of lock. CONDITION: Fair with salt and pepper pitting on most areas of barrel, lock and rammer. Brass has a very pleasant patina overall. The wood stock has numerous period bruises and dents with no significant material loss. The smooth bore is dark with areas of light pitting. The lock operates properly. An attractive US Civil War pistol.
