Very unusual 6-1/2" round barrel that is lightly engraved “SAML COLT” on top surrounded by light engraving, blade front sight. Six shot round cylinder. One piece walnut grips with brass front and backstrap. This exact pistol is pictured on page 55 and discussed on pages 55-56 of Nathan Swayze’s book ’51 Colt Navies. An extremely rare 1851 Navy variation. Housed in a contemporary display casing made by our consignor. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. “Bill” Stewart of Sonora, Texas; James D. Julia Auctions. CONDITION: Poor to fair, all metal surfaces with scattered light pin prick pitting. Grips with losses, drying cracks and repairs at shoulders on left, losses to shoulder on right, overall no finish remains, scattered battering marks throughout. Case is excellent. Perhaps the only opportunity a collector may have in a lifetime of searching to obtain this variation. JSL
