Abias Smith (1818-1900) worked in several counties in western Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh, in the mid-19th century. He worked in Clinton, Allegheny, and Lawrence counties. The rifle features an octagonal barrel signed on the top flat "A.B.S." in script. Flat percussion lockplate with stamp engraved designs at tail, features double set triggers. Plain brass furniture including a four-piece patchbox with five piercings and in the typical Pittsburgh style. Full length figured maple stock of familiar western Pennsylvania form with double-incised lines along forend. CONDITION: Very good. Barrel retains a freckled surface with dark patina and some corrosion at breech. Lock has some corrosion in center and functions well. Brass retains a dark and unpolished patina. Stock very good with the exception of a break on each side of forend, which could be easily repaired. This is an attractive and completely original Pittsburgh area rifle.
