In 1870, Springfield Armory altered approximately 1,300 Sharps percussion rifles for the .50-70 round. This is a first type that features walnut stocks. Frame, breech block, lock, lever, trigger plate, and lever catch are case colored; the barrel, bands, buttplate, swivels and ramrod were left in the white. The near mint stock has a perfect "ESA" cartouche. CONDITION: Strong case colors, metal bright, beautiful stocks with minor marks, mirror bore. Simply the finest example of this rare Sharps model one could hope to find. Rifle comes an original period leather sling. Early model with brass hook and a single keeper. No visible maker but stamped "J.S.".
