Production reached just 1,001 rifles in 1871 only. One of the earliest bolt action rifles entertained by the US military that simply did not go over at the time which accounts for its scarcity. The left side of stock has two sharp US cartouche stamps; "ESA" for Erskine Allin and "JWK" for John W. Keene. Bolt is stamped Ward Burton with patent dates. Side of frame is stamped "US / SPRINGFIELD / 1871". CONDITION: When you examine the inside chamber of this rare rifle, you will plainly see that there are no powder burn marks of any kind. Metal finished in the white is near new with a few light areas of age spotting which shows its age and original finish and never polished. The walnut stocks that show the usual ding or two from storage and handling but still exhibits the raised grain. Bore is near mint and unfired as well. Comes with period original leather sling with brass hook and two keepers. You will probably never see a nicer all original example.
