Standard issue Indian Wars Trapdoor rifle. Features two barrel bands, post front sight, and 1873 pinned rear sight. "VP" proof on right side of barrel. "Mass" stamped on top of breech. Block dated 1873, as is the dated Springfield eagle on sideplate. Walnut stock with faint but visible "ESA" Erskine Allen cartouche and visible script "P" on wrist. There is an "R" carved into left side. Buttplate has no trapdoor. CONDITION: All legends are sharp. Barrel has smooth patina. Block has no case colors. Stock has the usual bumps and bruises. Rifling is sharp and clean. There is a repair at toe that is about one-third of stock, and some grain separation on stock as well. A nice example of an early, five digit 1873. Comes with original period leather sling; single brass hook with two keepers. Stamped US. Written in pen inside "Sid Hull Co K 3rd Ill".
