Early 1878 dated rifle that was still using many 1877 parts with new 1879 changes. Rifle marked rear sight has screw heads. Two piece trigger guard. Barrel has "VP (eagle head)" proof on left side of barrel. Block is stamped "US MODEL 1873". Lock has the US eagle but is not dated. Buttplate has no trapdoor. The walnut stock has oval cartouche stamped "ESA" for Erskin Allin and dated 1878. The script "P" is stamped on lower wrist of stock. Has short thick wrist. CONDITION: Barrel is age spotting blue and patina. Traces of color on block. Wood is excellent with great original finish and sharp stamps with just usual handling marks. Comes with original period leather sling that features brass hook and two keepers.
