The all black Buffalo Soldiers consisted of eight companies that was formed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 1866. Led by white officers, they fought the remainder of the decade against the most dangerous tribes, the Cheyenne, Arapahos and Comanches; and distinguished themselves in battle after battle. The right side of the barrel is stamped "F" for company along with "10th Cav". This is three groove .50-70 conversion of a percussion era Sharps Civil War carbine as US issued during the Indian Wars. Features round barrel, post front sight, Lawrence rear sight, saddle ring and bar, old tape priming system intact, and walnut stocks. CONDITION: All metal surfaces are a soft brown patina. Stocks are excellent with just the usual marks, and a small chip on left forend, and no visible DFC ribbon. Sharp legends. Fine strong bore. A nice, used, smooth example of a carbine that saw use in the Civil War, returned to the arsenal where it was updated for cartridge use and then used on the American Frontiers. A piece of US history that led to the expansion of the states after the devastating Civil War.
