A mere 316 Ward Burton saddle ring carbines were made in 1871; one will travel thousands of miles and search hundreds of gun shows and never see an example of this US Springfield issue carbine. The carbine features a 22" barrel, no sling swivels, saddle ring and bar, single barrel band, and no cleaning rod. It was also one of the earliest bolt action rifles used by the United States. The side of frame is stamped "US SPRINGFIELD 1871". The bolt is stamped with the Ward-Burton patent dates. It features iron mountings and was finished in the white. Walnut stock has no visible cartouche stamps. CONDITION: The factory oil quenched frame is now a dull gunmetal grey with sharp legends. The balance of white metal is a soft patina with overall age freckling appearance. Stocks are very good with numerous bumps and bruises, indicating this carbine was used on the Frontier and did not sit at a state militia storage center. The bore exhibits sharp lands and grooves. A very handsome and very rare US Indian Wars carbine.
