Conrad Horn produced firearms is Hazelton, Pennsylvania from 1820-1880. This is a Hawkins style, half stock, extra long, heavy octagon barrel sporting rifle. Barrel measures 38 inches and features a full heavy octagon barrel which is incised with initials of the maker "CH" features a and dovetail front dovetail blade front sight and a brass backguard. The lock is not maker marked and is basically grey patina with salt and pepper texture. Hammer shows light engraving. Has a period nipple and a rusted and pitted bolster. The one piece half stock is in very good with a period repair at wrist that is cracked, and has some repair pins, but is in an area that is very dark overall. Varnish is drying with some cracking and raised grain. Barrel is a brown patina with some overall light salt and pepper texture extending approximately 10 inches from breech. Equipped with double set triggers and a brass trigger guard. Has a rollover cheek piece, solid brass rifle butt plate and nose guard. The .52 bore is drilled for a false muzzle, has an all steel rod held to barrel with two thimbles. Fine strong rifle bore that is still very shootable. Has a lollipop stem sight. Weights 14 pounds 2 ounces. These were very popular as sniper rifles during the Civil War, especially in the south.
