This rare sword features a slightly curved steel blade with two partial fullers on each side. The top of the spine is inscribed "Iron-Proof". The right side of the ricasso is stamped "HORSTMANN/ & SONS/ PHILLIP" and the left left side is stamped with a king's head proof. Standard brass hilt with D guard. The quillon, both sides of the knucklebow and on the back of the pommel tang are all decorated with additional designs that are not found on the standard regulation sabers. Black leather covered wooden grip, wrapped with strand of twisted brass wire. Complete with original steel scabbard with two ring mounts. CONDITION: Fair. Blade retains a very dark heavy patina, with tip slightly rounded, and some scattered areas of corrosion. A few nicks are present on the edge. The hilt shows scattered marks from use and retains a dark unpolished service. Leather has worn through in high areas with wood now exposed. Scabbard retains a very dark heavy patina with a few shallow dents on the right side. This is a very scarce and desirable artillery saber. For a similar example, see page 230 of John H. Thillmann's "Civil War Cavalry and Artillery Sabers."
