This custom sporting rifle was constructed from an original 1878 military rifle of which 6,900 were produced between 1878 and 1881. They kept the barreled action and military sights but replaced the full length wood and barrel bands with a sporter or target style two piece set; to include a beautifully carved and checkered 13-1/2" walnut forend with Schnabel, and a like checkered and carved buttstock with large rollover cheek piece and Swiss butt. All the screws on frame were engraved. CONDITION: All metal is basically in the white with scattered age freckling. Stocks are excellent with sharp checkering and very little wear. Fine action. Strong, well defined, sharp rifled bore. This should make for one nice heavy caliber target rifle.
