According to this factory letter, this was shipped with nine other guns on November 6th, 1902 to one of Colt's largest Midwest distributors, Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett, and Co., Chicago. Stocks were not listed, indicating the standard Colt gutta percha sans eagles, 4-3/4" barrel, blue finish, in .38-40. It remains in the configuration. The .38-40 was on of the most overlooked calibers in that was hard-hitting and flat shooting. Nearly identical to the .44-40 with a slightly lighter bullet and a slightly flatter trajectory. This nice Colt remains in all original as shipped untouched condition. Two line barrel address is razor sharp, as is caliber on left side. Left side of frame has two line patent address with Colt pony. CONDITION: Gun has been used but was well cared for as evidenced by the fine high polish factory blue on barrel, approximately 50% of which remains. Bright nitre blue on ejector pin. Traces of blue on trigger guard and backstrap. Near perfect screws. Nice traces of case colors on forward area of frame balance having greyed out. Cylinder is basically grey patina. All edges are razor sharp and perfectly fitted. Grips are excellent to near mint and matching number is etched on right panel. All four Colt clicks, indexes and locks up perfectly, bore exhibits sharp lands and grooves with a hint of frosting and a few minor areas of blackpowder abrasion. A nice sharp and crisp turn of the century Colt Single Action Army.
