(Circa 1875) E.M. Reilly and Company were known for retailing high quality guns and rifles, and had a fine reputation. They did not actually have a factory, but sourced guns from the trade. This high quality rifle, most likely made by W&C Scott (serial number corresponds to Scott records for 1879), has 28" stub Damascus barrels with full length file cut rib with dolls head extension holding one standing, one folding leaf express rear sight, and silver bead front. Reilly name and Oxford Street London and Rue Scribe Paris addresses are engraved on tops of barrels. Barrel flats are stamped with London black powder proofs for 38 bore. Round bodied Jones under lever action is fitted with peninsula back spring locks having round bodied serpentine rebounding hammers. Locks are fitted with front acting stalking safeties. Action and locks are engraved with 90% coverage very finely cut, small open shaded scroll with rose bouquet highlights. "E. M. Reilly & Co" "London" is on each lockplate. Nicely figured and lightly streaked European walnut steel capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14-3/8" over steel buttplate. Stock features small right hand shadow line cheekpiece, classic flat top checkering at grip, along with a vacant silver oval and sling eye on toe line. Matching splinter forend has forward pivoting lever release. Weight: 9 lbs 2 oz. CONDITION: Good to very good, mostly original. Barrels retain most of their original brown, which has darkened considerably and has numerous marks and light scratches. Action and locks have perhaps as much as 30% original case hardening color where protected, but are mostly gray. Stocks retain some original finish, considerably worn, with numerous marks. Checkering considerably worn and wood at grip is slightly below metal. Bores are good to fine, shiny, with scattered pitting toward breech ends, lightly frosted toward muzzles. Action is tight. Locks are excellent. Right safety does not engage. This high quality rifle is undoubtedly a good shooter. MGM 59.
