Case colored 44 action with etched engraving of a running deer surrounded by foliate designs on right side, and a hunter with his gun up on left side with similar foliate border. No. 5 Schuetzen lever is correct for the Model 51 and the wood inserts are present. Pistol grip buttstock with cheekpiece. Checkering is of a coarse pattern. Buttplate is a No. 3 heavy Swiss style made from steel. Stevens forearm is of the two screw design and nicely checkered with just minor handling marks. Barrel is serial numbered 23638, not matching the action, 28" long, half octagon, apparently reblued. Barrel marked for .22 short. Not drilled and tapped for a scope. Stevens wind gauge front, rear sight missing. CONDITION: Traces of case color remains on the action. Buttstock shows considerable discoloration, believed to be from mildew and probably would clean. Minor dings and handling marks are present. Buttplate is now devoid of case color. Good action, excellent bore. Barrel has some loss of blue on bottom flat and on sharp edges. This gun is what is referred to as a "made up gun" as a loose barrel has replaced the original barrel. 44 actions are preferred by many shooters for shooting .22 rimfire cartridges and this rifle should clean up to be a good shooter.
