44-1/2 action is non-engraved (typical for this model) and case hardened. Action is fitted with a nickel-plated Pope three finger lever and double set triggers. Face of action is marked "P". Buttstock of highly figured American walnut is checkered and features a pistol grip. It is also fitted with a special design cheekpiece by Stevens exhibition shooter F.C. Ross which is more elevated for use with a telescopic sight. Nickel plated Pope special buttplate. The barrel is 30", tapered full octagon, No. 3 weight, and is marked on the top "Manufactured by the J. Stevens Arms and Tool Company, Chicopee Falls, Mass., USA." The Stevens forearm of matching walnut is of the two screw design, checkered, and is fitted with a factory installed Stevens-Pope palm rest with nickel plated base and stem. Front sight is missing, rear sight is a Stevens-Vernier with windage adjustment. Scope is a Winchester A5. Pope number under the forearm is 1851. CONDITION: Action retains almost all of its original vivid case colors. Lever has some minor patches of the nickel flaking. Buttstock shows only the most minor of handling marks. Buttplate shows minor wear. Barrel blue is excellent, showing minor brightness on the sharp edges. Forearm has four minor chips on the barrel end. Scope needs optical work. A wonderful example of a rare variation of a Pope special. TR
