Stevens Model 44-1/2 action Model 54. Action is scroll engraved. No. 4 loop lever, nickel plated, which is unusual as this model is normally fitted with a No. 6 Schutzen special lever. Face of the action is stamped 54. Buttstock has a straight grip made of fancy American walnut with cheekpiece and very fine checkering of a fancy style. Buttplate is a No. 5 Schutzen Special, nickel plated. Stevens forearm is of the two screw design and finely checkered in a fancy pattern. Barrel is serial numbered to the action. Pope No. 957 and Pope code 21/1.24. No. 5 weight. Full octagon. Barrel has not been drilled and tapped for a scope and was made as a breech loader only. Wind gauge front sight with adjustment knob worked by a screw. Rear sight is a Stevens-Vernier with wind gauge adjustments mounted on tang. CONDITION: Action shows traces of the case color. Buttstock has some grain separation behind the action. Wood finish is very good with a few small dents and scratches from handling. Buttplate has little wear. Forearm shows minor handling. Barrel retains over 90% of the blue, with losses at the sharp edges and one spot on the left side. Good action, bore is excellent. A fine old 54 that has seen little use. A great example of a very rare rifle. TR
