Case colored action not engraved. Lever similar to that found on a Model 51, with the wood inserts may be replaced or re-checkered. Buttstock of very fancy walnut, straight grip, typical Pope style nickel-plated buttplate. Stevens forearm is unnumbered, made out of fancy walnut matching the buttstock, of the two screw design. Replacement Stevens Pope style palm rest has been reblued with base turning plum. Stevens-Pope barrel, 32" long, #5 weight, full octagon, and fitted with false muzzle numbered 976, with a replaced blinding pin. Starter is unnumbered. Comes with correctly numbered loading rod. Barrel has empty rear dovetail, and one a front globe sight, fitted for a different length scope originally fitted to the rifle. Current scope is a Lyman 438 Field, and the rear sight is Lyman with a wind gauge in the base. Under the forearm, barrel is marked P 976 and 20/1.41, which is Pope's code, and the P indicates Pope's personal involvement with the rifle, either rifling it himself or inspecting it himself. CONDITION: 30% case colors on action still showing, some bright, balance turning grey. False muzzle will not seat completely - pins or holes need cleaning. Buttstock wood has been refinished. 50% nickel remaining on buttplate. Old time shooter Sam Clark once owned this rifle and claimed it to be the most accurate rifle he ever shot. Excellent bore and action. 90% bluing with high edge wear. TR
