Action engraved with deer on one side and bear on other, fitted with double set triggers and a lever typically found on a Model 51. Face of the action marked 54. Wooden ball fitted to the trigger guard. Buttstock has straight grip, nicely checkered, with very minor handling marks. Case colored buttplate. Stevens-Pope barrel is 30" long, #5 weight, half octagon, and has been drilled on the bottom, probably for a Stevens-Pope machine rest. Stevens forearm is of the two screw design and checkered. Original Stevens-Pope number has been crossed out and was re-rifled when Pope was at Jersey City. Jersey City numbers are 474/18.5/15/1.16 and completed 7-22-15, and marked "H.M. POPE." Starter is unmarked, but false muzzle is marked 1678 but crossed off and remarked 474. Front sight has been fitted poorly, Stevens-Vernier with wind gauge is fitted on tang. Stevens scope #161 is marked oddly on objective lens and does not appear to be correct on this rifle. Another sight base fitted on the barrel cuts through the Stevens-Pope name. CONDITION: Traces of case color remaining on action. Very minor handling marks on buttstock. Most of case coloring remaining on buttplate, quite bright. Some of forearm checkering is worn down from handling. Optics needs some cleaning. Action is good, bore is excellent. Barrel bluing is in excess of 95% retention, wear showing on sharp edges. TR
