Manufactured by the Burnside Rifle company with a 21 inch round barrel, blade front sight, and folding rear sight with graduations up to 500 yards. Cal. 54 Burnside and percussion cap ignited, two piece American walnut stocks with sling swivel mounted at butt and sling bar with ring on left side of receiver. Serial number 16710 is observed on top of receiver, top of dropping chamber and the number 5861 is found on bottom of removable breech. A very slight trace of the cartouche is evident on the left wrist of the stock at the confluence of the stock and receiver. Barrel is marked "CAST STEEL-1862" on top forward of rear sight. Receiver is marked "BURSIDE PATENT MARCH 25TH 1856" on top above breech. CONDITION. Good with metal having turned brown patina. Bore is slightly dark but has strong sharp rifling. Action operates properly and locks up tight. The two piece wood stocks have numerous bruises and small gouges from Civil War usage. This would be an ideal shooter grade collectible carbine.
