Nelson Lewis operated a gun shop out of Troy, New York from 1843 to 1888. This rifle features an extremely heavy octagon barrel that is fitted, includes an original brass bullet starter, long tang rear sporting sight, dovetailed knife blade front sight. The breech is stamped "N. LEWIS MAKER / TROY NY". Appears to be .52 caliber percussion. Has a single piece walnut half stock with deluxe grain and rifle buttplate with metal toe protector, a deluxe trigger guard and double set triggers, right side drop lock, single shot hammer percussion system with period lollipop folding long range tang sight. CONDITION: Barrel is basically a soft brown patina. Wood is excellent with roll-over left side cheek piece and pewter tip. Strong rifled bore with usual abrasion. These heavy barrel rifles were used for target shooting in the 1850's-60's and were called up for dual service as sniper rifles during the Civil War. Extremely handsome, well-cared for rifle.
