The .476 cartridge was developed because the bullet of the .455 failed to seal the bore in the Enfield revolver. It was approved in December of 1881 for the Enfield Mk III. The first Model 1878 revolvers in .476 caliber were shipped to London on June 26th, 1884, the serial number range for .476 revolvers ran from 13385 to 40016, shipped on October 24th, 1898; with the exception of 80 revolvers shipped in 1885, all .476 revolvers were assembled with small grips frames. Caliber of this revolver is marked on the left front trigger guard, which was moved to barrel in 1890. A total of 2,458 Model 1878 Colts were made in this caliber. 1,682 were manufactured in this configuration, there were no Model 1878 revolvers in .476 caliber engraved or ordered with special features as this was sold as a military revolver with no frills. The top of the barrel has the Pall Mall London address. Every cylinder chamber has the English proof mark. Standard features include six shot, double action, blued finish, Colt black composite grips, and lanyard ring. CONDITION: Revolver retains approximately 75% of the original factory blue finish, blending with soft brown homogeneous patina. Indexes and locks up like new with a bright, shiny bore. This revolver comes housed in a period case lined in red with a more contemporary box lid dealer card. Red lining is also more contemporary. There is a bullet block that holds 15 original cartridges along with a wood handle cleaning rod and a small wrench.
