(ca 1760) It is unusual for a gun of this quality not to be maker marked. It exhibits superb craftsmanship throughout, and it could easily be believed to have been made by someone like Griffin or Barbar. It has 37 - 7/8" barrel with London proofs at breech end, along with raised file decoration with teardrop finial. Muzzle is slightly flared. Large flintlock with rounded lockplate with cock bead border has semi waterproof pan with bridled friction frizzen. Large serpentine hammer has cock beads ending in foliate patterns. Back sliding safety engages at half cock. Lockplate is engraved with stand of arms and cock has some scroll engraving. Lock internals have fine file cut decoration. Double beaded steel trigger guard has relief engraved floral finial. Side plate appears to be of silver and has central helmet with radiating arms including spears, cannon, and swords. Stock of streaked European walnut has deep fluted comb and gracefully swept butt. Broad steel buttplate has stand of arms engraving on long top tang. Relief ribbon and shell carving is around barrel tang, and elongated drop points are behind lock and sideplate. An acanthus flanked silver crest plate is at top of grip. Full length stock attaches to barrel with three side bolts. A baleen ramrod with horn tip and steel worm tail rests in two beaded pipes and tail pipe. Weight: 5 lbs 14 oz. CONDITION: Good. Barrel polished bright with some subsequent frosting. No major pitting evident. Lock is mostly gray patina with some pinprick pitting. The same can be said for other steel components with considerable pitting on buttplate. Sideplate and crest plate are somewhat worn, once polished, beginning to tone. Stock retains most of an old oil refinish with some sanding marks over multiple dings and knocks. Carving slightly softened. There are a number of repairs along barrel channel, mostly on left side.
