(1898) John Oberlies was a highly regarded custom gun maker from Dayton Ohio, working during the 1930's. This fine custom rifle has 27" slightly tapered round barrel marked "C. C. JOHNSON" at breech end. Nicely fitted and filed scope blocks have been installed holding Unertl 6 X target scope in micrometer mounts. Flat side high wall action with standard lever and close set double set triggers, also features lightweight hammer and mid range Vernier tang sight. Action is engraved with full coverage very nicely cut open shaded acanthus scroll which surrounds vignettes of game on sides; a big horn ram is on mountainside on left, and a mountain goat is on right. No engravers signature is found. The scroll is reminiscent of the work of Joe Fugger. Cleanly shaped stump figured American walnut off hand buttstock has large rollover right hand cheekpiece, and point pattern checkering at grip. It measures 13" over brass buttplate with central rectangle engraved with the signature "John Oberlies." "DAYTON, O". Matching schnabeled forend with inlet ebony tip has applied silver acorn toward rear. Weight: 11 lbs. 11 oz. CONDITION: Excellent, near new, as custom finished, with only a few light handling marks in all wood and metal finishes. Bore is excellent. Mechanically excellent. Scope is excellent, optically clear. A fine classic American custom target rifle. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Francis Brown. MGM 102.
