Finding a blackpowder frame 5 - 1/2" etched panel Colt in the blued finish is one of the hardest to acquire of all the early Single Actions. Revolver has matching serial numbers on frame, trigger guard, and backstrap. Colt was no longer stamping serial numbers on barrel or cylinder, but bottom of barrel does have a 44 stamp. Also stamped 44 Cal on left trigger guard. Three line patent date on left side of frame. Type 1 hammer, type 2 ejector rod head. Black Colt gutta percha eagle grips, unnumbered, and fit fine to the gun but there is some gap at the frame indicating that grips are probably period correct original eagles replaced at some point. CONDITION: Etched panel is readable. Razor sharp barrel stamp. Barrel retains approximately 20% of the original high polish blue blending perfectly with grey patina, recess of ejector rod housing retains 90% brilliant blue, balance patina. Cylinder is void of any original blue. Frame colors have mostly faded with a few traces of color. Traces of color on hammer. Touches of bright factory blue on trigger guard and backstrap in protected areas. Traces of fire blue on screws and true. Grips are excellent to near mint. Has all four Colt clicks. Action locks up like a vault. Strong rifled bore with the light blackpowder abrasion and should clean better. Classic blackpowder Colt SAA with a nice homogeneous appeal. A beautiful and extremely scarce 5 - 1/2" barrel revolver.
