30" dovetailed barrels fitted with broad slightly raised, concave, matted pigeon rib are engraved "Wm Cashmore. Maker. Birmingham" and "Highest Awards Adelaide. Melbourne Laungeston Hobart & Christ Church" on tops. Barrel flats are stamped with nitro proofs for 2 - 3/4" chambers. Unusual ogee backed removable trigger plate action features automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), sliding hidden third fastener, bushed strikers, and double triggers in removable trigger/ hammer group, which is quite ingenious and reminiscent of the system used today by Perazzi and others. Interior of this mechanism is engraved "Patent 19102" and with use "no. 10". It is retained in position by a pivoting lock as part of trigger guard tang. Action is engraved with 90% coverage very well cut open scroll. This fine scroll surrounds vignettes of hunting dogs on sides; a pair of setters on left and pointers on right. "Wm Cashmore" is on each side. Top lever, trigger plate, and trigger guard are blued, and are engraved with matching scroll. Serial number is at rear of trigger guard tang. Very finely marbled and lightly figured European walnut round knob pistol grip buttstock measures 13 - 5/8" over engraved and checkered steel buttplate. Borderless point pattern checkering is at grip, and a vacant silver shield is on top rear of comb. Matching splinter ejector forend has Anson release. Gun is housed in what appears to be its original oak and leather case with brass corners embossed "C. WALLACE" "VANCOUVER, B.C." Interior is lined in dark green cloth and has reproduction William Cashmore label in lid. Case contains 2-piece rosewood and brass cleaning rod, horn handled chamber brush, crystal oil bottle, pair of Hawksley snap caps, and some very nicely made new accessories including celluloid handled turnscrews and dusting brush, along with a bone striker bottle. CONDITION: Good to fine, as partially refinished. Barrels retain nearly all of an old re-black. Action has traces of case color where protected, is mostly silver. Other parts retain most of an old re-blue, engraving very slightly softened. Stocks retain nearly all of a hand rubbed oil refinish, checkering re-cut. Wood considerably below metal through wrist. Bores are excellent, lightly frosted. Action is tight. Mechanically fine. Ejectors strong and in time. Case leather is still light in color, with numerous marks and scrapes. Renewed interior cloth is very fine with rubs and compressions. Accessories are fine. New accessories are excellent. A very interesting pigeon gun with barrels that measure almost perfectly. MGM 124.
