According to "Historic Pistols" by Samuel E. Smith and Edwin W. Bitter, John P. Moore operated a gunshop in New York City between 1823 and 1840. Although Moore had no federal or state contracts for martial pistols, this pistol and other known examples suggest single pistol commissions or small commissions of pistols ordered. To see another example by Moore, see Pages 304 and 305. This example features a round brass barrel with East India Company proofs on the left side of the breech and marked on top "NEW-YORK". The flat lockplate is decorated with sprigs of engraving and stamped "J.P. MOORE/WARRANTED" in the center. It also features a detached pan. There is a single lock retaining screw and no sideplate. The brass trigger guard has some crudely engraved designs. Small brass oval wrist escutcheon and plain brass pommel cap. Stock is of plain walnut, ramrod is a contemporary replacement. CONDITION: Very good overall, showing very little wear. Barrel retains a mostly polished patina and markings are excellent. Lock is in original flintlock configuration and markings are very good, cleaned bright. Brass furniture is polished. Stock is very good with a few light storage marks. A very nice New York pistol.
