John Oberlies was a famed gun maker from Dayton, Ohio prior to World War II and is world renowned for his custom work. The basis for the rifle was a J.M. Marlin Ballard falling block action that has been beautifully engraved in scroll and floral, with running deer panel scene on left side and buffalo on right side. These are both standard traditional Marlin engraving patterns; buffalo can be seen on pages 205, 221 and 223 and deer is similar to several patterns in the Marlin-Ballard book. The extra heavy round barrel is factory set with two scope blocks and ramp front sight. Barrel is signed "JOHN OBERLIES DAYTON O". The custom tang sight is stamped "J OBERLIES". Hammer and trigger are custom stippled. Block is jeweled. Bottom of lever is stippled. Beautiful custom walnut forend features wrap-around hand checkering, ebony insert, and Oberlies signature arrowhead set in bottom rear of forend. Custom walnut stock features drastic rollover cheek piece, hand checkered pistol grip, and black ebony insert. Finely knurled steel buttplate signed "JOHN OBERLIES DAYTON O". Bottom of stock has ID plaque that reads "J. Oberilies 1954 Dayton O". Stock is oil finished with lovely grain. CONDITION: Gun retains nearly all of its custom finish. Near mint bore. Fantastic Oberlies post-war custom single shot target rifle.
