Following the Civil War, the U.S. Government in 1867 decided to convert many of the percussion arms to metallic cartridge breech loaders. They converted a total of 31,098 carbines in all three styles to include the model 1859, 1863, 1865. Both original six groove bores or relined with three groove rifling and refinished by the factory when completed. Carbines with the lined barrel were converted to .50-70 centerfire. This example is a three groove .50-70 with a replaced front sight blade, Lawrence patented folding rear sight, single barrel band, saddle ring and stud, walnut stocks, blue finish with case colored frame. CONDITION: Barrel retains approximately 90% of a dull reblue finish with light salt and pepper texture under finish. Frame is dark with no traces of color. Frame has sharp legends. Stocks were refinished at one time and there are no visible cartouche stamps. Fine action and near mint bore.
