Elijah Buell was active in the arms business during the Revolutionary War; he worked in Marlborough, Connecticut and on October 1st, 1776 he delivered 40 muskets "of his make" to the privateer Oliver Cromwell. This musket was patterned after the 1763 Charleville musket. He also did business repairing and manufacturing for local militias and operated an inn and tavern in Marlborough between 1750 and 1799. The musket features a round .73 caliber barrel stamped with "D" for Charleville, as well as a small star. The flat lock is stamped in the center with an eagle and marked vertically at the tail "E. BUELL". The furniture appears to be a mixture of American and French components. The trigger guard is of the Charleville pattern while the buttplate appears to be of American manufacture. This musket is an interpretation of the Model 1763 Charleville and is clearly based on that pattern. The three iron barrel bands are all retained with springs. The full length walnut stock has no markings. The musket is complete with its original iron ramrod. Complete with its original triangular socket bayonet which fits properly and retains a matching patina. The blade of the bayonet measures 15" and overall length is 18". CONDITION: Very good. Barrel, lock and all iron components retain a brown patina and have not been cleaned. Lock is in its original flintlock configuration and has excellent markings. There is some corrosion around the touch hole. The stock is very good and has not been cleaned; retains much of its original finish with some age cracks around the barrel tang and a minor crack in front of the lock. This is a very rare and early musket in remarkable condition, few specimens by this maker are known.
