This is an original CDV of California Volunter Philo G. Tuttle. Tuttle was one of 73 men who were members of the only Civil War Unit raised in Mendocino County, California. They were Company E of the California Mountaineer Battalion. This is the only known image of that battalion and proves that they were a regular infantry unit and issued frock coats. Philo enlisted as a Corporal in Company E June 9th, 1863. They were raised for service against the Indians in Humboldt County. They spent the entire Civil War out West, fighting hostile Indians. The back of the photo is signed by Tuttle to his uncle. CONDITION: CDV is in excellent condition and comes with documentation and history about Tuttle and his unit.
