This Lancaster style rifle features a full octagonal barrel with sights mounted on top flat and an unusual extended two screw barrel tang. The flat lockplate has stamp engraving at the tail and is marked in the center with indistinct lock maker's mark. The brass furniture includes a four piece patchbox engraved in the style of Melchior Fordney. Between both side skirts there are repeating chevrons carved. The brass sideplate is engraved with stars, rocker panels borders, and panels of checkering. The trigger guard is engraved with serrations similar to those seem on Melchior Fordney rifles. The full length partially figured maple stock is of classic Lancaster form with diamond section checkering around the wrist, carved incised lines on each side of the forend, scrolls around the lock cavity and sideplate, and a large "C" scroll on the left side of the butt, surrounded by graduating chevrons in the style of Melchior Fordney. Complete with replaced wooden ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel retains a dark patina with some applied finish. Lock is a professional reconversion and shows some wear and corrosion. Brass furniture retains a mellowing patina. Stock has some splinters missing along both sides of forend and a few chips around lockplate. The carving is crisp and shows little wear. The lock mechanism needs adjustment. A very nice Lancaster rifle.
