John Dreppard was a gunsmith and lock maker whose shop was located at the corner of Mulberry and King Streets in Lancaster City, Pennsylvania. He was listed between 1810 and 1840 as either a locksmith or a gunsmith. His locks are found on many Lancaster County long rifles. This example features a heavy octagonal steel barrel with rocker panel engraved designs around the sights and stamped "DREPPARD / LANCASTER" on the top flat. Flat percussion lockplate also stamped "DREPPARD / LANCASTER". Features double set triggers. Brass furniture includes a four piece patchbox engraved with scrolls and leaf patterns, and a classic keyhole pierced finial. Sideplate is engraved with Acanthus leaves. Full length maple stock of familiar Lancaster form, diamond section checkered wrist. Engraved silver oval escutcheon inlaid above cheek piece. CONDITION: Possibly shortened slightly during period of use, barrel retains an even brown patina with some corrosion around bolster at breech. Barrel markings partially visible. Lock excellent and retaining a grey patina. Brass retains a mellow patina. Stock has been refinished and has some scattered age cracks and marks from use. There is a crack on each side of wrist extending to the comb and some minor chipping at back of barrel tang. This is a very nice example of a Lancaster rifle by a well-known maker and overall is in very good condition.
