The simple uncluttered elegance of these guns has made them always popular. This expertly restored example, built in 1911, for S. Howard, Esq. (according to factory letter), has 30" dovetailed barrels engraved "WESTLEY RICHARDS. 178. NEW BOND ST. LONDON. GUN MAKERS BY APPOINTMENT TO HIS MAJESTY GEORGE V. REX ET IMP." on slightly swamped concave game rib. It appears that this is gun "2" of a pair, with "2" inlaid in gold on rear portion of rib, top lever, and forend latch. Rib has usual Westley Richards dolls head third bite extension. Barrel flats are stamped with Birmingham nitro proofs for 2 - 1/2" chambers. Case hardened round bodied ogee backed action, fitted with Westley Richards hand detachable locks (use number 1699), which are housed under hinged blued floorplate, also features non-automatic safety, Westley Richards third fastener, and single selective trigger. Aside from color hardening, the only embellishments on the action are the nicely filed beads around fences and "WESTLEY RICHARDS" in gold on each side. This name is also engraved around top lever pivot. Removable locks are engine turned, and are gold inlaid "L" and "R". Well streaked and nicely fiddle figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14 - 1/2" over leather faced Silver type pad. Point pattern checkering wraps around bottom of grip, and a silver oval engraved with monogram "SH" is on toe line. Matching splinter Deeley ejector forend with inset horn tip has Deeley release. Gun is housed in good quality tan leather VC case with stitched leather corners. Case is lined in burgundy cloth, and has black leather gold embossed Holloway & Naughton label in lid. Case contains H&N marked 2-piece ebony and brass cleaning rod, round oil bottle, and snap caps. Mop, brush and jag are in a leather pouch. CONDITION: Excellent, as completely and competently refurbished, most likely in England by H & N. There is evidence of very little subsequent use, with some minor silvering on barrels and wear through varnish on action, as well as a few light scratches in renewed stock finish. Checkering re-cut, with a few lost lines. Bores are excellent, shiny over a few light scattered pits, one light ping on top of left barrel toward muzzle. Action is tight. Barrels are on face. Ejectors are strong and in time. Justly famous Westley trigger works well. Case is excellent, near new. MGM150.
