Made for Bob Smith, a U. S. agent, and delivered in 1924, this gun was made for either pigeon or trap shooting. With its heavy proof, 32" demi-bloc barrels fitted with narrow matted ventilated rib. Left side of top barrel is engraved "Westley Richards 23 Conduit St. London Gun Makers By Appointment To HM The King "OVUNDO"". Barrel flats are stamped with Birmingham nitro proofs for 2 - 3/4" chambers. Barrels are not fitted with mid ribs, and there is large scroll engraving on muzzle joining block and ejector bolsters at rear. Case hardened action with ornamental sideplates, is fitted with hand detachable locks with patent use number "3386" on each lock and water table. Locks are engine turned and gold inlaid "R" and "L", and are housed under hinged floorplate. Action features non-automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), double bite top fastener, and single selective trigger with selector button at right. Sideplates have hinged inspection covers to view the workings of the single trigger, with all internals engine turned. Action and lockplates are engraved with full coverage very large shaded acanthus scroll. "Westley Richards" is on each sideplate. Top of action is engraved "WESTLEY RICHARDS" "PATENT ONE TRIGGER". Top lever, floorplate, and trigger guard are blued and engraved with matching scroll. Bottom of floorplate is engraved "Westley Richards" "Patent" "OVUNDO". Small bow trigger guard has serial number on tang which extends to engraved horn grip cap. Very finely streaked and lightly figured European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14 - 1/2" over brown leather faced Silver type pad. Stock features drop points and closely spaced point pattern checkering with reverse curve line at rear of pattern, and a vacant gold oval on toe line. Matching fairly slim one piece ejector forend has Deeley release. Gun is housed in most likely original oak and leather case with brass corners. Case is lined in green cloth and has large paper Westley Richards label in lid. Gun fits bottom compartment very well. Accessories include a pair of Westley Richards marked snap caps and square oil bottle, as well as some cleaning equipment. CONDITION: Excellent, as partially refinished. Barrels retain nearly all of an old re-black. Action and lockplates retain 70-80% original case hardening color, silvered and rubbed through at high features by normal hand wear. Original blue of top lever is silvered on thumbpiece. Floorplate retains over 80% of its original blue. Trigger guard considerably silvered and worn retain about 20% of its original blue. Stocks retain over 90% of an old oil refinish, with a scattering of light marks. Checkering has been cleaned up. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Barrels are on face. Ejectors are out of time. Trigger works. Case leather is darkening, considerably bumped and rubbed on edges. Straps and handle are good. Interior cloth is good with soiling and rubs, and a large area in lid and compartment bleached from spillage of some cleaning compound (most likely rangoon oil). Accessories are good. MGM172.
