Serial number 484 can be found stamped on both grips, both sideplates, inside bottom left frame, both links, lever, and buttplate. Bolt is stamped 348. The Volcanic Firearms barrel stamp is very light and it appears as if the stamp was almost missed, as the only legible word is "PATENT", and the top half of "NEW HAVEN CONN" and "FEB 14". 1854 in patent date is not visible and "VOLCANIC FIREARMS CO" is not visible. According to the book "Volcanic Firearms" by Steven Rutter, page 58, "The markings varied in depth or were lightly impressed. On some pistols, "VOLCANIC" or other works may only be partially legible or completely worn away." Has the single hook extractor. Details according to the book "Volcanic Firearms" by Steven Rutter: Page 56 shows locations of serial numbers. Page 56 shows typical factory engraving. Page 57 shows rear frame adjustable sight. Page 60 shows common sight for the pistol carbine. Page 61 shows serial number 469. Page 59 shows matching number stock. Page 63 shows non-ribbed barrel. Page 64 shows buttplate. Frame is engraved in typical Winchester style, a series of scrolls and leaves. Engraving extends to frame and buttplate. It is estimated that only 300 of these were ever manufactured. 191 is stamped into buttplate. CONDITION: Barrel retains approximately 85% original blue, some brilliant, with areas of soft patina showing through. Retains approximately 85% period (?) silver plating. Most of the case colors have darkened on the hammer and lever, side of hammer have turned brown patina. Attaching screw is a replacement. Varnished walnut stocks have been refinished at one time and are slightly shy to metal, with a couple usual dings. Strong, clean, near mint bore. Stock is excellent with a few dings. 90% original plating on buttplate. Beautiful, high condition, factory engraved pistol carbine rarely seen in this condition. Extremely rare and historical. CORRECTION: Upon further inspection, it has been determined frame is silver plated and attaching screw is a replacement.
