The basis for this rifle was an all matching Model 1899 with matching serial numbers on buttstock, forend, and frame. The Savage buttplate is stamped 211462. This rifle was exported to Germany where a new barrel was installed that is stamped "HOMMELSHEIM DORTMUND". The breech of the barrel is installed with a claw scope mount, as is the rear tang of frame. Equipped with two leaf folding rear sight and a checkered low front sight ramp with brass bead sight. Underside of the barrel has the German proofs along with caliber listed as "7.6MM". German style sling swivels have been installed on barrel and rear of stock. Forend has the typical slight Schnabel design. Frame has hand chiseled deep relief engraving scenes covering the entire frame. Left side is decorated with two antlered elk with two fawns set in a deep forest setting; and the right side with two deer in a forest scene with ferns and leaf engraving. Front receiver bridge is finely hand stippled and tang is deep relief engraved with leaf pattern. Frame screw and lever screws have been engraved. The base is engraved with in a leaf floral pattern. CONDITION: Barrel retains approximately 98% of the custom blued finish applied at time the rifle was converted in Germany. Lever has traces of original case colors. Wood is original to gun; proud to metal with nice finish, a bit of crazing and some minor bumps and bruises. About the only flaw is there is a chip off bottom of toe approximately 1-1/4" that could easily be repaired by any competent woodworker. Action works like new. Bore shows sharp, well defined rifling with a bit of frosting. If you collect Savages or just fine rifles, this is something a bit different with hours of hand engraved embellishment.
