It is estimated that 1,000 of these carbines were manufactured and was sometimes called the 11th New York Volunteer Cavalry Model since they were used by that unit. The 11th New York Cavalry unit fought in over 85 battles and skirmishes between 1862 and 1865, the majority armed with this carbine. Easily distinguishable from the Navy for its 19" barrel and lack of screwed-in leather cover, the Army Type lacks both the screws and screw holes that were used in attaching the covering. Features round barrel, dovetailed front sight, adjustable long range rear sight, brass buttplate, rear butt sling swivel, and saddle ring and stud. Left side of barrel is stamped "SHARPS PATENT 1859". Right side is stamped "SHARPS & HANKINS PHILADA". CONDITION: Barrel is a pleasing brown patina. Frame and lever is a smooth grey-brown patina. Hammer retains approximately 85% of the original bright nitre blue finish. Walnut buttstock is excellent with no cracks, just some minor handling marks. Extremely clean, well defined, and sharp bore. An extremely fine condition example of a very rare, seldom seen, non-leather covered Sharps & Hankins Cavalry carbine.
