A total of 4,250 were manufactured 1843 to 1846, made by N.P. Ames, Springfield, Massachusetts. Features two brass barrel bands, integral front sight, brass buttplate and trigger guard, and nearly full length walnut stock. Saddle ring on lower tang. "P" inspector stamp on lower tang. Barrel is stamped "W. JENKS P USN RP P 1847 CAST STEEL". Right side of action is stamped "REMINGTONS HERKIMER NY". Has the so-called side hammer "Mule Ear" type. Inspector stamp and cartouche "RP" Richard Paine on left side of stock. Production was on contract for the United States Navy, who sold 2,800 of them in August of 1861 to A.M. Eastman of Manchester, New Hampshire. There were 3,421 on hand at the Philadelphia Navy Yard in 1863. During the war, they were on the Schooner Ariel in charge of the blockade in Galveston Harbor, Texas. CONDITION: Barrel is a sharp factory brown finish with some age freckling. Sharp markings. Traces of case colors on frame. 50% blue on rear sight. Stocks are excellent. Brass is soft patina. Sharp, clean, near mint bore. A very fine, all original example of the Civil War Sea Service.
