Between 1900 and 1909, Mills Novelty Co. created the Electricity Is Life shock machine in response to the interest in using electricity to "Treat All Forms Of Muscular Ills." Also referring to electricity as "The Silent Physician," the reverse glass sign within informs patrons it is "Good For The Nervous System Too." This particular example is a John Papa re-creation, one of just twelve made. The papier-mâché dial, decorated by four strongmen at the corners, measures from 0 to 250, supposedly indicating the status of the patron's health. The tall cabinet is composed of quartersawn oak with ornate cast iron components in a polished finish and decorated with Victorianesque decals. The physical appearance is exceptional throughout and the machine is in working order, offering a shock from the induction coil connected to the handles. Includes keys and a copy of Michael Papa's book "No Tampering! - A Guide To Papa's Re-creations."
Condition: (Excellent).
