The 1842 percussion musket was the first percussion ignition system weapon adopted by national armies. It is also the last smoothbore armies made at both Springfield and Harper's Ferry. Between 1856-1859 14,182 were rifled. This example is unaltered. Beginning in 1844, the year this musket was manufactured, the War Department armed the U.S. Second Regiment of Dragoons with this rifle. Features two barrel bands on fore end. U.S stamped buttplate. Left side of barrel has the VP Eagle proof. Top of the tang is dated 1845. Lock is stamped with eagle and US Springfield 1844. Has sling swivels mounted to middle band and trigger guard. CONDITION: All metal, with the exception of lock, hammer, and buttplate, are dull gunmetal grey toning brown with age freckling. Walnut stock is excellent with usual dings. Has a 1/2" stress crack at right side of wrist. Has the visible but illegible oval cartouche on left side. Has a fine action and very good fairly clean bore. A very nice, clean, untouched example of an 1842 US Springfield musket. Comes with a US stamped bayonet.
